NSHD disrupts glass market with carbon neutral solutions

During 2022, Nippon Sanso Holdings embarked upon a bold new Carbon neutral world strategy that not only positions the group at the forefront of the industry’s role in society’s decarbonisation, but outlines our dedication to reducing the industry’s carbon footprint itself.

The Carbon Neutral World strategy represents the company’s commitment to contributing to a sustainable society for the future, and spans the entire group’s operations and business entities, including MATHESON in the US and Nippon Gases across various geographies, not least Europe.

Toshihiko Hamada, President CEO of NSHD, told gasworld, the focal point for global industrial gas news, views and information, in an exclusive Interview of the Month in October, “In the past few years, the world has become aware of the strong sense of crisis over carbon dioxide emission, and initiatives for its reduction have been spreading.”

“All industries, including steel, chemical, ceramics, automobile, and electronics have started to take strong initiatives towards reducing carbon dioxide. These industries are our clients. Since the beginning of our existence, the NSHD group has been conducting business by providing solutions to meet the needs and challenges of our clients. We believe that today’s transition to carbon neutrality is indeed a major challenge that we must concentrate all of our strength into solving.”

This includes the glass sector, where out oxyfuel technology is supporting customer efforts in reducing energy consumption.

By reducing the amount of air in the process, which contains 78% nitrogen, a furnace becomes more effective in its use of energy – reducing associated CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions. Oxyfuel technology use permits to all kinds of glass furnaces, to be more efficient in the use of available energy, thus reducing CO2 emissions.

Simultaneously, the application of NSHD’s Diluted Oxygen Combustion technology contributes to drastically reduce NOx and dust emissions across the site, whilst maintaining the highest safety standards.
